Shami tree - The sacred tree - Agni Garbha indeed

शमि शमयते पापं शमी शत्रुविनाशिनि ।
अर्जुनस्य धनुर्धारि रामस्य प्रियवादिनि ।

Shamee Tree destroys our paapaa, it destroys our enemies. It was holding the Dhanas of Arjuna for one full year and it is Sri Ramachandra’s favourite tree.

Banni in kannada, Prosopis Spicigera - taxonomically, Rajasthan - Khejri, Bishnois - Janty
Tamil - Vanni, Gujarati - Sumri

Wondered Why shami tree is
1) अर्जुनस्य धनुर्धारि and
2) रामस्य प्रियदर्शिनि

Of course one arjuna's story we all know.... At school, we read that story and ask about banni mara (shami tree) but Rama's is what triggered my curiosity
There are many fascinating stories behind the auspiciousness of the Shami tree.

Lord Rama prayed for his victory in front of the Shami tree before marching to Lanka. Thereafter, the Shami tree is worshipped during the Aparahna Muhurat on Dussehra.

In Dwaparyug, during the year of disguise in the kingdom of Virata, Pandavas had hidden their celestial weapons on the branches of the Shami tree for a year before going to Virata. After completion of a year, they returned to the Shami tree and found that their weapons were safe in the branches of the tree. They worshipped the tree for keeping their weapons safe and used the same weapons against Kauravas on Dussehra.

Kauts, the disciple of Vartantu, wanted to set up an Ashram and therefore, he asked for 14 crores gold coins from King Raghu. The king had already donated his wealth, but to meet the demand of Kauts, Raghu set out for a war against Kuber (God of Wealth). On this, Kuber showered gold coins from the tree of Shami. Raghu donated gold coins to Kauts and remaining coins were doled out to others. From this day, people started worshipping the tree of Shami.

More interesting part here

So, what makes Shami tree special?

Shami tree is known as ‘Agni Garbha’, one that holds fire in the core. Every tree holds some element of fire, however, only Shami tree named as ‘Agni Garba’. Other trees produce fire upon friction with each other during hot summers in the presence of high winds. Whereas, a Shami tree log when churned with Peepal (ashwatth) tree log produces fire that is rightly apt to be used in all Vedic rituals involving Yajna. Yet, not all Shami trees can be used in this purpose. Only the Shami tree that gives birth to Peepal tree within itself can be used. Both of these trees must both be growing together as one unit. The logs from such two trees become the right inputs to the desired output of the ‘Yajna’.

My ayurveda doc says -
This is ulleka in Ayurveda - How agni should be churned and used

Nava Nidhi –

https://hinduism.stackexchange.com/questions/22206/what-are-the-eight-treasures-of-kubera - source

padmaś caiva mahāpadmo matsya-kūrmau tathaudakaḥ
nīlo mukundaḥ śaṅkhaś ca nidhayo ’ṣṭau prakīrtitāḥ

The eight mystic treasures are called Padma, Mahāpadma, Matsya, Kūrma, Audaka, Nīla, Mukunda and Śaṅkha.

There is a mention of it in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam tenth skandha shloka 55.

śyāmaika-varṇān varuṇo hayān śuklān mano-javān
aṣṭau nidhi-patiḥ kośān loka-pālo nijodayān

Lord Varuṇa offered horses as swift as the mind, some of which were pure dark-blue, others white. The treasurer of the demigods, Kubera, gave his eight mystic treasures, and the rulers of various planets each presented their own opulences. [10.50.55]

 So, the eight treasures are:

1.      Padma

2.      Mahāpadma

3.      Matsya

4.      Kūrma

5.      Audaka (Makara)

6.      Nīla

7.      Mukunda and

8.      Śaṅkha

The details of some of these Nidhis is given in Vamana Purana chapter 76.

Imperishable Nidhis are existed in their complexion. History, PurAna, Vedas with their parts (Angas), Veda, Smrtis, sixty four Kalas and Mahapadma Nidhi are vested with the goddess having white complexion. Pearls, gold, silver, chariot, horse, elephant, garments, weapons, arms and Padmanidhi in the form of garments are vested with the goddess having red complexion. Cow, buffalo, donkey, camel, gold, garments, land, medicines and MahAnila Nidhi in the form of animal are vested with the goddess having yellow complexion. Śañkha Nidhi in the form of the best among all castes embedding with her all other castes is existed with the goddess having blue complexion. O demon! Now I am going to describe the characteristics of Purusas falling under these complexions of Nidhis. Understand these all. [31-35]

O demon king, The people sheltered to Mahapadma observe truth and purity and always engaged with performing yajña, donation and festivals. [36]

The man with Padma perform yajña, enjoy luck, egoist, honour preferring, generous to high level and enjoy more pleasure as compared to the common people. [37]

The person vesting MahAnila are found using truth and false in mixed form, clever while doing transactions. They do justice, injustice and extravagant. [38]

O Bali! The people vesting Śankha are found atheist, unclean, miser, away from luxury, thief and liar. O demon! I have thus, described their complexion to you. [39]

So, the complexions of these Nidhis are:

Mahapadma Nidhi - White.

Padma Nidhi- Red.

Mahanila Nidhi - Yellow.

Śaṅkha Nidhi - Blue.

The names of these treasures are also given in a separate chapter (chapter 53) in Garuda Purana Karma Kanda. The names are slightly varied.

After hearing from Hari, Brahmä described the eight Nidhis. They are Padma (Lotus) Maha padma, Makara, (Crocodile), Kachhapa, (Tortoise), Mukunda, Nanda and Śaṅkha. These Nidhis are conducive to the flourishing of qualities Sattva, etc. I shall now describe their special characteristics. [1-2]

The two nidhis Padma and Mahapadma are Sattvika in characteristics. A person having the marks of makara gathers together swords, arrows, javelins, etc. [5]

Makara and Kacchapa — these two nidhis are supposed to be tamasika in characteristics. A person having the marks of Kacchapa does not have faith in any person. He neither enjoys his wealth nor gives it to anybody. [7]

He will keep his wealth boarded in a deep pit in the ground. He will remain a single person (without any friend). The nidhi Mukunda is rajasika in characteristics. A person having the marks thereof collects realms. [8]

He enjoys all good things in life and distributes wealth among musician and courtesans. A person having the marks of Nila - both Tamasik and rajasika and shall be the vital support to his family. [9]

A person having the marks of the nidhi Nanda shall have :sattvika splendour. He will gather together garments, grains, etc: [11]

He has the manliness and power of three persons. He will be making mango groves, tanks, etc. The nidhi Śaṅkha indicates self-centredness. He spends all his wealth in his own enjoyment. [12]

His servants and kinsmen eat wretched food and do not wear good garments. The Śaṅkha (one bearing the marks of Śaṅkha) is assiduous in nourishing himself. If, ever he gives anything to anybody it shall go in vain. [13]

When the markings of different nidhis are present the results are mixed. Lord Hari had thus expounded to Hara and others the characteristics of the nidhis. I am expounding now as Hari had expounded them previously. [14]

Characteristics of the treasures:

·         Sattva : Padma, Mahapadma, Nanda

·         Rajas : Mukunda, Nila (it is both Rajasik and Tamasik)

·         Tamas : Śaṅkha, Kacchhapa (also known as Kurma), Makara (Audaka)

Translation:

What is the source of light for you? To me, during the day, it is the lofty sun; at night, it is the lamp and the like. Let it be so. Tell me, in seeing the sun and the lamp, what is the source illumination? O, that is the eye! What then, when that (the eye) is closed? O, it is the intelligence! All right. What reveals the intelligence - its functions? Ah, coming to that, it is my own Self, the ‘I’! Well, your own Self is then the supreme brilliance, the ultimate light, the first and the last source of illumination! Is it not? Yes, O Lord, it is so – “I am That”.

Activity specific sloka

Slokas for our kids - categorised based on activity.

Every activity in one's life is viewed as a result of the powers above. Hence each activity is revered and a prayer chanted to execute the task on hand more out of sincerity and devotion rather than out of "i know everything" attitude.

It is said that:
Two things define your success in life:
1) The way you manage when you have nothing
2) The way you behave when you have everything

These slokas help not only keep one grounded but also reduce greatly the haste involved.

Recalling the sloka and chanting it, by itself and unknowingly induces a pause before the start of the activity which helps free flow of thoughts and a cooler approach to activity on hand...

1) Before the start of any activity
Suklam baratharam vishnum sasivarnam sathurbujam
Prasanna vadanam dyayeth sarva vignoba santhaye

one who wears a white garment, all pervading one who has a brilliant complexion (like the full moon) one who has four hands, one who has an ever smiling face I meditate upon thee for the removal of all obstacles.

A quick mind teaser: Any idea which god is invoked in this sloka?! Well, this as all our elders have taught us, is indeed a ganesha sloka but the name never figures and so the confusion. Well, the clue to the God is here:
a) "sasi varnam" - Vishnu is gen. megha varnam but here it is mentioned sasi varnam.
b) "sarva vignoba santhaye" - Ganesha is the only god called upon to remove obstacles and as maha periyava puts it he is the only vigna nashaka and hence this sloka refers to Ganesha.
c) "Visnum" - Lord Ganesha is actually called upon to protect and hence the word "visnum" or "the one who protects"

2) Prarthana
Twameva mata cha pita twameva
Twameva bandhushcha sakha twameva
Twameva vidya dravinam twameva
Twameva sarvam mama deva deva

You are my mother and my father You are my relative and friend You are my knowledge and my wealth You are my all O Lord of Lords.

3) EARLY MORNING PRAYERS (No idols, God is in our own self)
The first thing when we get up in the morning before we see anyone or anything we must look at our open palms joint together and recite this mantra

Karaagre vasate lakshmi
karamadhye saraswati
karamooleh tu govinda
prabhaate karadarshanam

The front part of the hands (the finger tips) are ascribed to Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, the middle part (the palm proper) to Goddess Saraswati - the Goddess of learning and the root (the part of of hand near the wrist) to Govinda (God). Therefore, every morning, one should have a respectful look at one's hand which symbolizes honest labor.

4) BEFORE GETTING DOWN FROM THE BED
Samudravasane devi
parvatastana mandale
vishnupatni namastubhyam
paada sparsham kshamasva me

O! Mother Earth, who has the ocean as clothes and mountains and forests on her body, who is the wife of Lord Vishnu, I bow to you. Please forgive me for touching you with my feet.

5) WHILE TAKING A BATH
Gange cha Yamune chaiva
Godaavari Saraswati,
Narmadhe Sindhu Kaveri
Jale asmin sannidhim kuru

In this water, I invoke the presence of holy waters from the rivers Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Saraswati, Narmada, Sindhu and Kaveri

6) BEFORE EATING
Brahmaarpanam brahma havih
brahmaagnau braahmanaa hutam
brahmaiva tena gantavyam
brahma karma samaadhinaa

A process of offering is Brahman, the oblation is Brahman, the instrument of offering is Brahman, the fire to which the offering is made is also Brahman. For such a one who abides in Brahman, by him alone Brahman is reached

7) AFTER EATING
अगस्त्यम कुम्भकर्णं च शनिंच बडवानलं
आहार परिपाकार्थ स्मरेद भीमं च पंचमं
Agastyam kumbhakarnam cha shanim cha badavaanalam
Aahaara paripaakaartham smared bhimam cha panchakam

Chant this mantra while caressing your stomach with your left hand in the anti clock wise direction after having your meal. It helps in quick digestion.

8) a) WHILE LIGHTING A LAMP
Shubham karoti kalyaanam
aarogyam dhana sampadaa
shatrubuddhi vinaashaaya
deepajyoti namostute

I salute the One who is the lamplight, that brings auspiciousness, prosperity, good health, abundance of wealth, and the destruction of the intellect's enemy

b) WHILE LIGHTING THE LAMPS DURING KARTHIGAI FESTIVAL
Keetaha PatangAha MashakAha cha vrukhshAha
JalE sthalE ye nivasanti JeevAha
DruShTvA pradeepam na cha janma bhAjAha
SukhinAha Bhavantu svapachAha hi viprAha

Keetaha - insects; PatangAha - fireflies; MashakAha - mosquitoes; cha - and vrukhshAha - trees;
ye  JeevAha - those living beings nivasanti - whose abode is; JalE - water; sthalE - land;
DruShTvA pradeepam - see this kartigai deepam; na cha janma bhAjAha - may they attain the end of the cycle of samsaram
SukhinAha Bhavantu - may they all be happy; svapachAha hi viprAha - be they chandalas or highly revered vedic pandits.

Learned people say that just by seeing the brightly lit kartigai deepam, insects, birds, reptiles, trees and all living things residing in water and land can be permanently liberated from bondages and cycle of rebirth and stay happy, be it chandalas or revered pandits.
