We have to take up these four vratams in our life: चन्दनव्रत, हेमव्रत, कमलव्रत and स्वामिव्रत ।
चन्दनव्रत (The Sandalwood Vrata): Look at how sandalwood is rubbed against a stone and yet yields fragrant paste till the last pinch of it. Even the little leftover piece of wood is rubbed with a finger to get the maximum paste. Live your life too in such a way that you remain of some use to the society till your last breath. Even on the day of his Mahasamadhi, Swami Vivekananda was teaching Vyakarana to students. We should give up idleness and be active.
हेमव्रत (The Gold Vrata): Before it is turned into an ornament, gold is heated in a furnace and constantly beaten over the anvil. It puts up with all this and eventually comes out as a beautiful ornament. Similarly, we should face all the challenges that life throws at us. We take all the beatings and only turn more mature. Every challenge in life is therefore an opportunity towards growth.
कमलव्रत (The Lotus Vrata): A lotus is born with mud around it. It is born in mud, yet blooms into being a beautiful flower. Despite the circumstances in life, we should always be able to rise above and bloom in life. Do not let circumstances be your excuse for anything.
स्वामिव्रत (The Master Vrata): Work like a master and not like a slave. When you work for work's sake, you are working like a master. On the other hand, if you are working for the sake of the result, you are working like a slave. Work is inevitable in life, and you better work like a master than as a slave. This is karma yoga.
